Best of 2013

BALANÇO DO ANO 2013 /BEST OF 2013 BY ELDER ALMEIDA

analisar a natureza/

dos seus silêncios.

É aqui que Deus se esconde

de mim que o procure?

Parei para ouvir,

depois de umas escassas pessoas terem saído,

o ar que se recompunha

para a vigília. Esperou assim

reanimar. As sombras avançam

dos recantos para se apoderarem

dos lugares qua a luz conservou

durante uma hora. Os morcegos

voltam a andar por aqui. O desconforto nos bancos corridos

termina.

numa cruz abandonada.”

I must confess I have always enjoyed taking stock, whether it be of the year that has just ended or of any other thing. In our life we are always comparing what is good to what is bad, restaurants, holidays, films, music… . Being the author of radio shows (Ondas da Música, Rádio Etiópia, Alma Danada) it is only natural that I should want to take stock of what 2013 brought us in terms of culture, especially as regards music and films. For the past few years, I have been divulging a lot of music and films in the programmes I have mentioned.

As far as my musical choices go, I have selected mostly works that do not have much to do with the current mainstream; they belong to a more restricted group.

Concerning this past year’s TV series and films, I would like to emphasize products that are easily accessible to consumers but, despite that, have great quality.

In my shows I always like to quote a fragment of a literary work, a poem, a sentence and that is why I would like to highlight the book “Servidões”, by Herberto Helder, a beautiful, strong book which I had the privilege of paying homage to in one of my programmes/shows.

In the last week of 2013, in Pedro Mexia’s weekly chronicle in the Expresso, a Portuguese weekly newspaper, I got to know Ronald Stuart Thomas’s poetry. It is one of his poems, a most beautiful one, that I am transcribing below. Next, I give you a list of top my choices for 2013.

Often I try
To analyze the quality
Of its silences. Is this where God hides
From my searching? I have stopped to listen,
After the few people have gone,
To the air recomposing itself
For vigil. It has waited like this
Since the stones grouped themselves about it.
These are the hard ribs
Of a body that our prayers have failed
To animate. Shadows advance
From their corners to take possession
Of places the light held
For an hour. The bats resume
Their business. The uneasiness of the pews
Ceases. There is no other sound
In the darkness but the sound of a man
Breathing, testing his faith
On emptiness, nailing his questions
One by one to an untenanted cross.
